St Peter's Church Smallburgh

The present church almost certainly stands on the site of an earlier Norman building. The first rector recorded is Henry Hemingburgh, in 1305, but the register of St Beenet-at-Holme records the presentation of John of Smallburgh to the Rector in 1186.

The church is mainly 15th century, the original tower having fallen in 1677, damaging the West end of the nave. In 1885 the chancel was restored by the incumbent, the Revd W. T Griffith, and in 1902 the Western bay of the nave was restored to its original length, the two bells being hung in a bell-cote.

The roof decoration was inspired by the German wife of the Revd, J R Milne, but was not finished.

The base of the rood screen remains with the original 15th century colours and eight panels of saints, much defaced. Three separate panels have been restored, and hung above the pulpit, and a plain octagonal font at the West end of the nave.

Prayer book services are held on at least three Sundays of each Month, at 0800-0930. On the second and fifth Sunday there is a group service held at one of the four churches in the benefice -Smallburgh, Dilham, Honing and Crosswick. The church is generally open on Saturdays and Sundays in the summer.

The Parish Priest is the revd William Hill (Tel 01692 403402)
