Garden Bins

Garden Waste Disposal imageGarden Waste Disposal image

To help meet tough Government recycling targets and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, North Norfolk District Council is offering residents the opportunity to register for a garden waste collection.

Garden waste forms a significant proportion of what is classified as household waste, and almost all of it can be recycled by composting. Composting reduces the volume of landfill sites required for burying waste, cuts harmful emissions from landfill sites and reduces the demand for scarce natural resources such as peat.

About the garden waste scheme in North Norfolk

Residents joining the scheme will receive a 240-litre brown bin free of hire charge and only pay for the fortnightly collection. The annual charge for collection is just £31.98 (pro rata if you join part way through the year).

Garden waste must not be put into either of the green or grey bins provided under the Twin Bins scheme.

Currently you are not able to dispose of kitchen waste (e.g. vegetable peelings etc.) in the brown bin but we are working towards changing this. Please revisit this page for updates when available. Any additional garden waste placed alongside the brown bin will not be collected. Turf, soil and stone should not be put in your brown bin. Please be careful not to fill the bin so it is too heavy to move.

You could dispose of large amounts of garden waste by hiring a skip or bulk bag from a local contractor - look in the Yellow Pages under 'Skip Hire' or 'Waste Disposal Services' or visit www.yell.com or by taking it to a Norfolk County Council Recycling Centre.

You can use your brown bin for

  • grass cuttings
  • hedge clippings
  • weeds
  • leaves
  • flowers
  • plants
  • vegetable tops
  • prunings
  • bark
  • twigs
  • small branches
  • Christmas trees
