Investing in the future of North Norfolk

NNDC has proposed a £1.1m recession recovery package for the District, with a range of projects to help the economic recovery of North Norfolk. The package aims particularly to help those small businesses that make up the majority of the North Norfolk economy, but which tend not to qualify for central government support packages. It will also aim to encourage inward investment towards larger projects such as the Sheringham Shoal Wind Farm, and to encourage investment in skills training.

The package has been welcomed by the business sector across the whole county, with Caroline Williams, chief executive of the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce, saying, “A stronger vibrant North Norfolk economy will encourage investment, attracting jobs in addition to supporting current businesses.”

The plan includes:
  • Having a finance fund to help struggling small businesses
  • Encouraging people to become self-employed and creating subsidies on industrial units for start-up companies
  • Working with King’s Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Council to market northern Norfolk as a tourist destination
  • Creating a ‘procurement shop’ to help small businesses connect and sell their products and services
  • Committing the Council to start capital projects early, paying invoices quickly and buying locally
  • Extending planning consent deadline for commercial development from three to five years
  • Supporting people searching for work experience and promoting and providing training programmes
Thankfully 2009 has been a pretty good year for tourism in North Norfolk, with predominantly fine weather and, ironically, the recession, encouraging more people to holiday at home. Bookings have been up and there have been 13% more visitors to our beaches. But the UK is still officially in recession and it’s certainly not good news for everyone.
