Graham Allen Award

2011 marks the 30th anniversary of the Graham Allen Award which was inaugurated in 1982 as a memorial to the late Councillor G.S. Allen, first Chairman of North Norfolk District Council. Since then, the award, in the form of a bronze plaque, has been presented annually by the Council to the scheme considered to make the most significant contribution to the conservation of the built environment within the District. Schemes considered worthy of commendation are also acknowledged by the presentation of certificates. The panel of judges comprises of members elected from the Development Control Committees, the relevant Portfolio Member and Mr Edward Allen (who represents the Allen family).

During the years, awards have been made for both the conservation and restoration of listed and unlisted buildings and also for new buildings which, through their design, including the innovative use of traditional building forms and detailing, contribute to the built environment.

 2011 Winners

This year’s Graham Allen Award for Conservation and Design has been won by Tithe Barn, Old Lane, Walcott. This 19th Century barn had fallen into a state of disrepair and was in need of considerable intervention and restoration. The owner’s intention from the outset was to preserve the character and simple form and beauty of the barn.

Highly commended was an unusual project involving the conversion and extension of a 1970’s bungalow that was previously a cart shed at Langham Road, Binham. The judges considered that the bungalow had been transformed into a spacious home with dramatic views of 11th Century Binham Priory.

A development of 33 affordable dwellings at Lodge Close & Edinburgh Road, Holt received a commendation for the quality of the scheme’s locally distinctive vernacular design and overall contribution to community need.

On the 30th anniversary of the Graham Allen Award the judging panel gave a special recognition to the restoration of the Grade II* Listed Kelling Hall. They considered that this scheme had made an exceptional contribution to the art and practice of building conservation and design.

The awards were presented at North Norfolk District Council’s offices on 13 October 2011.
