Scheduled Ancient Monuments

top

Under Part 1 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979, as amended, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport has a duty to compile and maintain a schedule of monuments; monuments on the schedule have statutory protection. The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport is required to consult English Heritage before adding to the schedule or removing monuments from it. For inclusion on the schedule the monument must be considered to be of national importance using the criteria listed in Annex 4 of the Planning Policy Guidance note on 'Archaeology and Planning' (PPG 16). A Scheduled Ancient Monument may also be a Listed Building, and indeed many Scheduled Ancient Monuments still serve a useful purpose. There are 50 Scheduled Ancient Monuments in North Norfolk.
