Cromer

Marram’s Path Project

Aims

To realign a part of the Marrams cliff top foot path between Runton Road car park and Cromer town centre where it has been closed due to instability of the cliff.

Background

Cromer Marrams Path Before and After picture

In January 2007 part of the main cliff top footpath link between the principal tourist car park (Runton Road) in Cromer and the town centre and beach accesses was closed for safety reasons following a cliff slip. No suitable alternative route exists over land in public ownership.

The reinstatement of this key piece of infrastructure is seen as vital to the overall tourist offer of Cromer and to the safety of pedestrians travelling from the car park to the beach or town. Visitors and the micro-economy they support are vital to Cromer.

This project will seek to re-establish a new footpath by negotiating with the private land owner to acquire land to create a new route for the footpath. As the existing footpath is a public right of way it will be necessary to formally close the old and then dedicate the new footpath as a new public right of way.

How and when is the project being delivered?

This project is being managed by the Coastal Management Team and the Project Officer is Brian Farrow (Principle Coastal Engineer). Cromer Town Council, the family who own the private land, the Bowling Green Committee through the Property Services team and the Norfolk County Council Footpaths and Rights of Way team are involved in the project.
