Entries encouraged for this year’s Environment Award

North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) John Sweeney Award for the Environment is now open for entries, offering the opportunity for community groups, schools and businesses to win both prize money and recognition for their environmental efforts or environmentally-themed projects.

The NNDC Environment Awards have recognised the efforts of grassroots ‘green‘ projects in the district for the last 18 years, but this year have been renamed in honour of the late Leader and Chairman of the Council John Sweeney. The awards aim to recognise the successes of organisations that have recently completed a ‘green’ project, or successfully worked to become more environmentally sustainable, or to improve and protect the local or global environment. This year winners of the John Sweeney award will receive a cheque for £500 as well as a commemorative plaque, while all shortlisted entrants will receive a certificate recognising their efforts, at an award ceremony at the NNDC Greenbuild event in September.

NNDC Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, John Lee, said, “We know that many organisations and groups in the district are taking an interest in their own environmental impact, or are looking to improve their local environment, or even educate others on environmental issues. Much of the time these efforts can go unrewarded, so the Council’s John Sweeney Award is a wonderful way for individuals and organisations to receive some well-deserved recognition and raise the profile of their projects.”
