Green Flag hoisted again at Holt
Holt Country Park has again been named one of the best open spaces in the UK, winning the right to fly the prestigious Green Flag for 2010/11.
It is the sixth year in a row that the park, run by North Norfolk District Council, has earned a Green Flag for being welcoming, safe, clean and well-managed.
In 2005, the park was the first in Norfolk to win a Green Flag — an award that demands year-on-year improvement for the status to be retained.
Only green spaces that are free to enter and open to the public are eligible to win an award through the scheme, which is run by environmental charities Keep Britain Tidy, BTCV and GreenSpace. This year 1200 open spaces won Green Flags and Green Pennants (Green Pennants are awarded to spaces managed by community or voluntary groups), compared with 1013 in 2009.
They are judged against eight criteria, for being: a welcoming place; healthy safe and secure; clean and well maintained; sustainability; conservation and heritage; community involvement; marketing; and management.
Councillor Hilary Nelson, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said: “The whole North Norfolk community treasures Holt Country Park. Our staff take great care in looking after it, and many groups make use of it and also take part in its conservation and management. Congratulations to everyone whose dedication has paid off, with the recognition that Holt Country Park is one of the best free open spaces in the country.”
