Free advice to businesses and individuals at flood awareness roadshows

10 October, 2008

Flooding is a serious, costly and stressful issue to those affected.

While it may not be possible to prevent floods happening, it is possible to put measures in place that can greatly reduce the impact of flooding and improve the resilience of your home or business.

North Norfolk District Council has joined Broadland District Council in running a series of flood awareness and climate change roadshows across northeast Norfolk in partnership with the Environment Agency and Anglian Water.

Councillor Brian Hannah, Cabinet Member for Environmental Health at North Norfolk District Council said: “It is vital that people think now about the potential for flooding in their area. There are many simple devices and measures available which can be used to protect homes and businesses. Several houses in North Norfolk and Broadland were affected by flooding in the past year. This is an ideal opportunity for residents to find out more from the relevant authorities”.

Ace Dann, Civil Contingencies Manager at North Norfolk District Council said: “The Environment Agency can provide much improved advanced warnings of the potential for flooding. There is no reason not to be prepared. If you live in a flood risk area you should consider robust flood defences as a standard feature for your home or business. This will save much heartache and financial loss in the long term.”

Mr Dann continued: “There will be a number of experts on hand at these roadshows to give advice on the range of options. Also, you can check the Environment Agency flood maps to find out whether you live in a flood risk area and register to receive flood warnings from the Environment Agency by telephone, mobile, email or fax.”

To find out how you can protect your home or business, come along to one of the events in the area this month:

  • Monday, 20 October— Aylsham, Bure Valley Railway, main car park
  • Tuesday, 21 October — Wroxham and Hoveton, Roys of Wroxham, main car park
  • Thursday, 23 October – Acle, Recreation Centre car park, Bridewell Lane.

The roadshows will run from 10am to 4pm. There will be free advice on flood protection and how climate change could affect our region.

There will also be advice on how you can save energy in your home as part of Energy Saving Week and the grants available through the local authority to help you install renewable technologies.
