Recognition for ‘good housekeeping’ suggestions
Two members of North Norfolk District Council staff have been rewarded for practical suggestions to help the council work more effectively and to help in financially tough times.
Liz Green and Gary Cass (left and right in the attached picture, with Councillor Jones) were each presented with a bottle of champagne, provided as prizes by Councillor Jones out of his own pocket. Their suggestions were among dozens made by members of staff in response to an appeal by Councillor Jones, whose portfolio includes the council’s performance improvement.
Administrative assistant Liz Green proposed a centralised stationery ‘cupboard’, to reduce the time and effort spent by teams across NNDC ordering small amounts of stationery to meet their own needs, and to allow efficiencies in procurement. Her suggestion is being taken forward through the council’s ongoing business process review.
Building control surveyor Gary Cass put forward an idea to offer a wider range of certification for building work, giving customers greater confidence in, and understanding of, the standard and performance of their property over things like sustainability and energy use, while also creating new revenue streams for the council. The legal position and practicalities of this idea are being explored.
Other ideas are also being taken forward, like reviewing certain contracts and harnessing the power of electronic systems to provide information and help move away from paper-based processes.
Councillor Jones said: “We must always be looking for smarter ways to work, not just in a time of recession. That’s good for our balance sheet, and it’s good for the taxpayers who trust us to use their money wisely, and who want us to be as effective as possible when they need our services. I’d like to thank and congratulate everyone for coming up with such imaginative yet practical suggestions.”
