Enter now to earn an Environment Award for your ‘green’ project!

20 May, 2008

If you are running a project to protect or improve a part of the North Norfolk environment, you could be in line for an Environment Award.

North Norfolk District Council gives out the awards each year (and has done since 1994) to recognise the work done by people, young and old and from all walks of life, in the District to protect our precious landscape and improve the sustainability of our communities — and to reward the best with £250 prizes.

The awards are given in four categories:

  • School (category supported by the North Norfolk News and Dereham and Fakenham Times)
  • Community (category supported by North Norfolk Radio)
  • Green build (category supported by the CSV Action Desk at BBC Radio Norfolk)
  • Small business

A fifth award, the John Sweeney Award (named in honour of the late Councillor John Sweeney, who championed environmental issues), is given to the entry that deserves a special mention but which does fit clearly into the four categories.

The closing date for entries is Monday, 2 June, 2008.

The judges will tour applicants’ projects in early June and will be looking at how they have made a positive contribution to the North Norfolk — and global — environment, or encouraged and influenced others to do so.

Awards will be presented at a ceremony at the National Trust-owned Felbrigg Hall, near Cromer, on 18 July.

Category winners will each receive a cheque for £250 while the John Sweeney Award winner will receive a trophy hand-made by pupils at Sheringham Woodfields School.

Last year’s category winners were Epringham Primary School for developing its grounds into eco-friendly learning spaces, Southrepps Commons Trust for its work managing and making accessible the village’s beautiful marshland areas, the Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s striking Cley Visitor Centre and the Natural Surroundings wildflower nursery at Bayfield. Pensthorpe Visitor Centre won the John Sweeney Award in 2007.

  • For an entry form or for more information, contact the award scheme’s organiser, Hetty Selwyn, on 01692 400937 or email env.awards@north-norfolk.gov.uk
