Action on street signs

19 May 2009

North Norfolk District Council has allocated £100,000 for a massive programme of fixing and replacing street nameplates across the district.

In the last three years, the council has replaced 600 street name signs that were broken or missing due to vandalism or other causes, and repaired 600 more. Now a thousand new street name signs will be installed in 2009/10, and by working with Norfolk County Council, NNDC intends to incorporate highways symbols (like cul-de-sac or no-through-road markings) into some of these nameplates so other signs can be removed, to reduce signage clutter.

The programme is due to start this summer. It will also allow NNDC to work with town and parish councils to clarify the names of streets where there has been no signage in the past, and to set up a new online system for the public to report lost or broken signs and to check on the progress of repairs and replacements.

Nick Baker, Strategic Director at NNDC, said: “We've struggled in the past to keep existing signs maintained and get new signs installed, but with this huge capital programme we can eliminate the backlog.

“Maintaining these signs is a never-ending task, and vandalism continues to be a big problem, and we ask the public to report acts of vandalism to NNDC and to the police straight away, so we can take action.”

Members of the public are asked to email any reports of damage or vandalism to streetsign.maintenance@north-norfolk.gov.uk
