Arrangements for elections on 4 June, 2009
Voters go to the polls on Thursday, 4 June to elect members of Norfolk County Council and the European Parliament, and a new District Councillor at North Walsham.
Voters go to the polls on Thursday, 4 June to elect members of Norfolk County Council and the European Parliament.
Eleven county councillors will be elected to represent North Norfolk residents, while seven MEPs will represent the whole of the UK’s Eastern Region. An election will also be held for a vacant seat on North Norfolk District Council, the North Walsham (West) ward, following the resignation of Councillor Mark Birch.
Nominations for all these elections have now been received. Details of the nominees are attached.
Polling stations will be open across North Norfolk from 7am to 10pm on 4 June.
Electoral registration
To vote in the 4 June elections, North Norfolk residents must be registered as electors by Tuesday, 19 May. Find out how to register and download a registration form by visiting www.northnorfolk.org/council.asp or calling 01263 516046 or 516317.
Tuesday, 19 May (by 5pm) is also the deadline for applying for a postal vote, or cancelling or changing an existing postal vote. Applications for proxy votes — when an elector is unable to get to a polling station and wants someone to be authorised to cast their vote in their place — must be made by 5pm on Wednesday, 27 May.
Polling cards are being distributed to registered electors across North Norfolk. Anyone who has not received their polling cards by the end of Monday, 11 May, should call the numbers above to check they are registered.
Philip Burton, North Norfolk District Council’s Chief Executive and Electoral Registration Officer, said: “We want to make sure that no-one misses out on their right to vote. If you are in any doubt, please check with us. North Norfolk people are always very keen to have their say in politics, and we usually get high turnouts compared with much of the country. There are some huge issues facing Europe, the UK, the county of Norfolk and our own District, and I hope people will seize this chance to influence what the future may look like.”
Election counts
The ballots for the Norfolk County Council elections from North Norfolk polling stations, and for the North Walsham (West) NNDC ward, will be counted on the night of 4 June at Cromer Sports Hall. North Norfolk’s European Parliament votes will be counted at Cromer Sports Hall on Sunday, 7 June. (European election rules mean that results cannot be declared until counting has finished in all member countries, which is not due until that Sunday night.)
Media organisations wishing to send staff to cover these counts are asked to contact Nick Manthorpe at North Norfolk District Council on 01263 516059 or by email at nicholas.manthorpe@north-norfolk.gov.uk to arrange admittance and to discuss your requirements.
