North Norfolk – the cleanest of the clean
North Norfolk is the cleanest part of the UK, with North Norfolk District Council winning the top trophy in the 2009 Clean Britain Awards for keeping its towns and parishes free of litter and rubbish.
The Awards, run by the British Cleaning Council, were presented yesterday [Tuesday, 10 March] at the NEC in Birmingham. Entries are judged (with an anonymous inspection) against a number of criteria including litter and fly tipping, waste bin management, chewing gum and cigarette butt litter, dog fouling and signage and street furniture cleanliness.
NNDC won the overall Winner’s Trophy, as well as topping the District category. Truro in Cornwall and the royal town of Windsor and Eton in Berkshire picked up the City and Town awards respectively. North Norfolk District Council, which manages environmental cleansing in the district through its contractor, Norfolk County Services, also earned a five-star grade for its overall standard of cleansing.
The media are welcome to attend a photocall at 12 noon today [Wednesday 11 March], in the sunken gardens on Cromer’s Runton Road clifftop (meet in the adjacent Runton Road car park), to meet representatives from NNDC and NCS, and with the District Council’s trophies available. If you are unable to attend, please call Nick Manthorpe on 01263 516059 or 07748 641715 to arrange interviews later.
There are 27 operatives working in North Norfolk’s £650,000-a-year cleansing service on things like street sweeping, litter picking, litter bin emptying and clearing fly tips.
Councillor Brian Hannah, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, picked up the trophy yesterday. He said: “Keeping the District clean is critical for our local economy, which depends so heavily on tourism. We have to give visitors a great welcome, and this award could persuade even more people to take a holiday in North Norfolk. Our residents tell us that cleanliness is important to them, too.”
Nick Baker, Strategic Director for the Environment at NNDC said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this award. The Council has invested heavily in cleansing, litter control and fly-tipping prevention and this is our reward for the efforts of all the staff and our contractors involved. We have combined a highly flexible approach and good planning with a tough stance on fly-tipping, to ensure we keep North Norfolk looking good and as litter-free as possible.”
