Fined for fly tipping and burning waste
A self-employed painter, decorator, plumber and general maintenance man pleaded guilty at Great Yarmouth magistrates court on 19 October for the tipping and illegal burning of waste.
Bryan Gibson pleaded guilty and was convicted of transporting waste from a bathroom renovation job in Norwich to Potter Heigham in North Norfolk, where it was illegally fly-tipped and burnt. The resulting bonfire contained bathroom furniture, plastics, tins, cans, aerosol containers and cardboard packaging, causing significant atmospheric and environmental pollution and potential harm to human health. He was fined £1050 for three separate offences, and ordered to pay £1026 costs plus a £15 victim surcharge.
North Norfolk District Council Environmental Protection officers visited the site, and investigations based on material found in the burned pile of discarded waste led to Mr. Gibson.
Cllr John Lee, NNDC Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “As well as behaving anti-socially and threatening both people and the environment, he was seeking to cut his costs and benefit financially. Such behaviour is totally unacceptable.
“Supporting local businesses is very important for North Norfolk District Council, but we will always pursue anyone who fly tips in our district. We have no sympathy for people who seek a competitive advantage over others by acting illegally.
“I would also like to thank the vigilant members of the public who reported this incident. I would urge other members of the public to report to us any events of this nature so we can all work together to keep North Norfolk clean and safe for locals and visitors alike."
Anyone who witnesses fly-tipping or suspects that waste is being disposed of illegally is asked to report it to the Environmental Protection team at North Norfolk District Council via www.northnorfolk.org/report-it or 01263 516085.
