Local Communities to Contribute to Flood Sirens Review

8 January, 2008

North Norfolk District Council is giving residents of coastal communities in the district the opportunity to contribute to a review of the future use of flood sirens along the Norfolk coast.

The county-wide review involves not only North Norfolk District Council but also The Borough of King's Lynn and West Norfolk, Great Yarmouth Borough Council and Norfolk County Council. Council officers and Councillors from all four authorities involved are currently working with coastal parish and town councils, where flood sirens exist, to establish whether the siren/s in each community should be retained, moved or decommissioned.

In North Norfolk meetings with parish councillors, and with flood wardens where a flood warden team exists, will take place in January. As part of this process, working with parish councils, the District Council distributed questionnaires over the Christmas period to residents in the effected parishes, asking if they had any comments that they would like to have included within the overall review.

"We want to know what people really think about the use of flood sirens," said Ace Dann, Civil Contingencies Manager for North Norfolk District Council. "The questionnaires have been welcomed and we are already receiving very useful comments from the residents of the North Norfolk coastal communities involved,"

These individual comments, along with the outcome of the meetings with parish representatives and flood wardens in North Norfolk, will be incorporated within a report covering the future of flood sirens along the whole of the Norfolk coast, which will be presented to the Fire and Community Protection Panel of the County Council in March.
