Proms Closed at Cromer and Sheringham

9 November, 2007

Cromer and Sheringham Promenades are closed while high winds continue to batter the North Norfolk Coast, and while North Norfolk District Council cleans up the damage and debris left by last night's storm surge.

The surge left beach chalets and huts damaged - some severely - along Cromer's seafront, and bent railings, damaged accesses and smashed chunks of concrete off the sea walls in both towns.

Both promenades have been closed off with fencing and warning signs, and will stay closed while the debris is removed and the structures made safe. They will open to the public again as soon as possible, but that is not likely to be before Monday.

Cromer Pier has also been closed to the public, having suffered damage to its decking, and is also not likely to re-open before next week. The show scheduled for tomorrow night at the Pavilion Theatre, a remembrance celebration by the Salvation Army Band organised by the local Rotary Club, has been moved in conjunction with pier management company Openwide International to another venue - St Peter's Church in Sheringham. The show will start 15 minutes later than planned, at 7.45pm, and people who have yet to collect their tickets can do so on the door.

NNDC Strategic Director for the Environment Nick Baker said: "The promenades are currently dangerous places and we would ask everyone to be sensible, and not to try to access them while we make them safe. We will do that as quickly as we can."
