RNLI Museum Wins North Norfolk Design Accolade4 October, 2006The RNLI Henry Blogg Museum and restaurant on Cromer's Promenade has won the 2006 Graham Allen Award for Conservation and Design. The museum stands at the foot of the Gangway in Cromer, and houses the historic HF Bailey lifeboat, which served under famous coxswain Henry Blogg during the Second World War. It also includes a gift shop, a restaurant on the top floor, a public lift to the clifftop, and new public toilets. Comedian Ronnie Corbett opened the building in April this year. Now the building's contemporary but respectful design, which follows the curve of the cliff behind it and mirrors the Georgian crescent opposite, has earned it a Graham Allen Award from North Norfolk District Council. The Graham Allen Award for Conservation and Design is now in its 25th year. Named in memory of the first Chairman of North Norfolk District Council, the late Councillor Graham Allen, the award recognises buildings that make a significant contribution to the built environment of the District. The award, in the form of a bronze plaque, was presented on 28 September to architects Purcell Miller Tritton LLP by the late Councillor Allen's son Edward, who sits on the judging panel. The museum building was commissioned by the RNLI Heritage Trust and North Norfolk District Council. Also in the 2006 award scheme, the new church hall extension at St Peter's Church, Sheringham, was highly commended by the judges for its meticulous attention to detail, while the sensitive conversion of St John's Hall in Holt received a commendation.
