Recycling Your Garden Waste - the Compostibilities are Endless!12 April, 2006North Norfolk District Council marks national Compost Awareness Week in May with a special event at Holt Country Park to help people who want to make their gardens grow - without having to dig deep into their pockets. From Monday 8 May to Saturday 13 May, between 9.30am and 4.30pm, recycling officers from the Council will be on hand near the visitors' centre with a display stand, to give out information about composting, explain the benefits of composting at home, and tell North Norfolk residents about the special offer for cut-price composting bins they are eligible for. They will also be giving out free samples of "soil conditioner" - the compost-like additive for soil that North Norfolk's garden waste is turned into after it has been collected from the District's brown bins. Anyone who wants to take a sample of soil conditioner is asked to bring their own containers and shovel. And on the first day (Monday, 8 May), a composting advisor from the nationwide Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) will be present to give more specialist advice. Compost Awareness Week is run by the Composting Association with the aim of getting people to recycle more. A great deal of kitchen and garden waste can be recycled by composting it to produce food for the garden, saving money on fertilisers and reducing the amount of waste going into landfill. NNDC offers its residents special deals on three sizes of composter: 220 litres, 330 litres, and 700 litres costing £4, £6, and £20 respectively. All compost bins are delivered free of charge and come with a free kitchen caddy and liners. Call 0845 077 0759 to order. North Norfolk residents can get their garden waste collected for £30 a year for 26 fortnightly collections (using a brown wheeled bin provided by the Council free of charge). Call 01263 516301 to sign up to the scheme. NOTE FOR EDITOR ENDS
