the award for running the annual Green Build event.

North Norfolk District Council has pipped the competition to a Green Apple Award for its annual exhibition to promote sustainable construction and renovation.

NNDC is to be recognised for its Green Build event at the Green Apple Awards presentation in London on 8 November.

Council Leader Simon Partridge is due to collect the award at a ceremony at the House of Commons, hosted by the Rt Hon Patricia Hewitt MP, Secretary of State for Health. The precise nature or category of the award won't be revealed until the evening of the ceremony.

NNDC also won a Green Apple Award in the year 2000, when it was named 'best council' in the East Anglia and Midlands region, on the strength of its many environmental initiatives.

The annual award scheme is run by the Green Organisation, a non-profit group supported by the Environment Agency, Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, Chartered Institute of Wastes Management, Municipal Journal, and other bodies.

NNDC has run the Green Build event for three years. Over two days this year, on 15 and 16 April, exhibitors showed off the tools, materials and techniques for building sustainability into construction or renovation projects. The event included demonstrations, talks and advice from experts in the field of sustainable construction.

More than 4000 people attended Green Build - more than 10 times as many as in previous years, when interest tended to be limited to school parties or building trade representatives. The event took place this year in Sheringham Park adjacent to the National Trust's new (and sustainably-built) visitors' centre.

Councillor Partridge said: "Green Build has turned into a genuine family event, that's of interest to any household that wants to conserve its resources. We're delighted that our efforts have been recognised in this way. It shows that caring for the environment is a 'core' priority for this Council!"

NOTE: The Council has its Green Apple trophy now - see picture.
