Barbara McGoun is New North Norfolk District Councillor23 February, 2005Liberal Democrat Barbara McGoun was named the new District Councillor for St Benet Ward after a byelection yesterday (Tuesday, 22 February). Councillor McGoun won 576 votes, to Conservative candidate Christopher How's 537 and Labour candidate David Spencer's 36, in an election that saw a turnout of 65%. St Benet Ward, which includes Horning, Neatishead and Barton Turf in the Broads area, has almost 1800 registered electors. The win brings the ruling Liberal Democrat group's tally on North Norfolk District Council to 29 seats, with 15 Conservative and Independent Alliance Councillors, and four Independents. The election was called after the death in December, after a short illness, of Councillor Colin Haddow, who was leader of NNDC's Conservative and Independent Alliance. Councillor McGoun will serve at least until 2007, when all North Norfolk District Council seats next come up for election.
