Cutting the Risk of Falls Among Older People - Advice for Carers22 March, 2004Unpaid carers in North Norfolk can attend a free training event soon to help them ensure the safety of older people who depend upon them. Every year, one in three people over the age of 65 will have a fall, and half of those who do will fall again within a year. Two identical training sessions have been organised to help carers (like friends, family and neighbours) cut the risk of those falls happening. The events are at Holt Community Centre on 31 March and at the St John's Hall in North Walsham on 6 April (10.45am to 3pm each day, with lunch provided for free). They will consist of a range of sessions in which unpaid carers can talk about their experiences and share their concerns, while learning about how falls can be prevented, the equipment and services available to people who are susceptible to falls, and how to help someone who has fallen. The training days are free to attend, though a maximum of 25 people can be accommodated per day. They have been organised by a partnership of organisations (Norfolk Social Services, the North Norfolk Primary Care Trust, RoSPA and North Norfolk District Council) who work to support carers. Anyone wishing to attend one of the falls prevention training days - whichever is more convenient - or to find out more should contact Rebecca Cooper at North Norfolk District Council by calling 01263 516172.
