District Council's New Cabinet-Style Executive

23 October, 2003

North Norfolk District Council is now led by a Cabinet comprising the Council Leader and nine Members, each with special responsibility for certain portfolios, such as housing, waste and the environment.

The Council, which has had a Liberal Democrat majority since the elections in May this year, decided yesterday to change from a politically-balanced Executive Committee to a one-party Cabinet. All members of the Cabinet are Liberal Democrat councillors.

"We have taken time and very great care in choosing the different portfolios, the special areas of work," said NNDC Leader John Sweeney, who chairs the Cabinet but will continue 'without portfolio'. "They reflect, of course, not only what the Council considers to be the main issues and challenges ahead, but also the important key areas of work that have so far been identified by North Norfolk's Local Strategic Partnership in preparing the draft Community Strategy for the District.

"As part of the new Cabinet, the Portfolio Members will have a complete overview of the Council's work and services, and be responsible for the development and corporate co-ordination of their own particular subjects. They will also be the spokespeople for their portfolios, and be accountable - and more responsive - to the local residents and businesses that we are all here to serve."

NNDC's new Cabinet Portfolio Members are as follows:

  • Housing - Councillor Margaret Craske (Deputy Leader)
  • Health - Councillor Julie Thompson
  • Waste - Councillor Mark Birch
  • Economy - Councillor Clive Stockton
  • Tourism and Arts - Councillor Hilary Nelson
  • Leisure and Sport - Councillor Joe Turner
  • Environment and Planning - Councillor Simon Partridge
  • Resources - Councillor Peter Moore
  • E-Government and Communication - Councillor Sue Pointer
