New Guidance Leaflet on Replacement Windows

Helping keep the character of North Norfolk's towns and villages

5 February, 2003

Replacement windows can seriously damage the character and appearance of North Norfolk's precious built heritage.

This is the message issued this week by North Norfolk District Council, in a special leaflet designed to give local people and window suppliers more information and guidance on the best and most appropriate type of replacement windows to use on certain buildings in certain areas of the District.

"Windows are one of the most distinctive features of a building, and they make a major contribution to the appearance of our towns and villages," said Phil Godwin, NNDC's Conservation and Design Manager. "Poorly-designed replacement windows have a damaging effect upon the look and character of our built heritage, and seriously devalue the historic environment of North Norfolk.

The new leaflet, which has been produced by NNDC to meet a growing concern regarding inappropriate and unattractive replacement windows, explains when planning permission is required for replacements and offers general advice on their design. It includes a checklist to help determine when the appearance of a building will be 'materially affected' by a change in window design.

"We hope the new leaflet will be of assistance to window suppliers and the owners and occupiers of local properties," added Phil Godwin. "Only with their help can we retain the charm and character of North Norfolk's towns and villages."

Anyone who would like a copy of the new leaflet, and/or information and advice about the installation of replacement windows, should contact Phil Godwin or Chris Young, in NNDC's Conservation and Design Team, on (01263) 516131 or 516138.
