13 January, 2003

People who intend to stand in the North Norfolk District Council elections in May will soon be able to attend special briefing sessions to learn about the work and structure of the authority.

The sessions, which are being organised by the Council and will be held in February, will also tell candidates about the election process (and the pitfalls to avoid), the role and duties of a district councillor, and the current local government 'environment' of Best Value and Comprehensive Performance Assessment. Presentations will be given by NNDC's Chief Executive, the Director of Health and Corporate Services, the Head of Democratic Services, and a current District Councillor.

"There will be different sessions for the Conservative, Labour, and Liberal Democrat parties, and, in the main, these parties will arrange for their own candidates to attend," said Martin Austin, NNDC's Head of Democratic Services. "However, there will also be a session just for independent candidates, and it is important that they also get to know when and where it will be held."

The briefing sessions will be held at 6.30pm at NNDC's offices in Holt Road, Cromer on:

  • Monday, 17 February for Conservative Party candidates
  • Wednesday, 19 February for Labour Party candidates
  • Monday, 24 February for Liberal Democrat Party candidates
  • Wednesday, 26 February for Independent candidates

For more information about the briefing sessions, please contact Martin Austin, Head of Democratic Services, on 01263 516012.

A new leaflet, 'Stand and Deliver', which explains how to become a North Norfolk District Councillor, and the duties involved, is now available from NNDC's Electoral Services Office. Anyone who would like a copy should call 01263 516012.
