Public meeting - proposed housing scheme for North Walsham

Released on 12 February 2002

A public meeting will be held in North Walsham next week so that local people can hear about, and discuss, a plan to build a 49-home development in the town.

The proposal is to build a variety of flats, bungalows and houses on the former Walls Engineering site in Aylsham Road. Most of the homes will be provided as social housing for rent, but a number of them will be for shared ownership, which means that new occupiers can part purchase and part rent the properties. In addition, a number of houses will be built by a private developer and sold on the open market.

An outline planning application for the housing scheme is to be considered by North Norfolk District Council's (NNDC) Development Control Committee at the end of the month. If planning permission is given and if the Housing Corporation agrees funding for the social housing and shared-ownership properties, the scheme will go ahead and be developed jointly by the Broadland and Peddars Way Housing Associations.

The public meeting will be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday, 20 February, at North Walsham Football Club in Greens Road. Representatives of both housing associations and NNDC will be present.

"The aim of the meeting is to explain the proposed scheme and how it will be managed," said Nicola Simpson, NNDC's Housing Department's Development Officer. "As well as raising awareness of the scheme, I hope it will be possible at the meeting to start a waiting list for the houses for shared ownership."

NNDC will allocate the properties for rent from the Council's Common Housing Register.
