Chewing-Gum Removal in North Walsham10 December 2002Contractors movedinto the centre of North Walsham on Monday, 16 December, to get rid of chewing-gum stuck to the recently-laid York stone paving. The clean-up began at about 7am, with some slight disruption in Market Place as sections of pavement were cleaned. Local traders were made aware that the work was to be carried out. The work was expected to take two days at least, at a cost of around £600 per day. North Walsham District Councillor and town Mayor Roy Haynes said: "We have just had the town centre smartened up through the recent regeneration scheme, and already the pavements are looking filthy because of chewing-gum. "The cleaning work should cause very little inconvenience, but I hope people will understand that it is a nuisance - and an expense - which could be prevented if chewing-gum was put in litter bins, where it belongs."
