Enjoy Your Meal Without Smoke

Released on 7 March 2002

Issued jointly by Broadland District Council and North Norfolk District Council

A new guide to smoke-free eating places in North Norfolk and Broadland is being launched on Wednesday 13 March to coincide with No Smoking Day. It has been published for the growing number of people who want to enjoy a meal without it being spoilt by someone else's smoke.

A Norfolk Citizens' Panel questionnaire in 2001 showed that more than 90% of those surveyed want the choice of smoke-free areas in restaurants, and 74% want smoke-free provision in pubs. The new guide has been compiled to help local residents and visitors who want to eat out but don't want to eat in clouds of smoke.

The guide has been published jointly by North Norfolk District Council, Broadland District Council, North Norfolk Primary Care Group and Broadland Primary Care Group, all of whom are partners in the Norfolk Alliance Against Tobacco. It contains a list of more than 180 hotels, restaurants, cafes and public houses that serve food in smoke-free or partially smoke-free areas.

The guide has three sections. The first contains the names and addresses of 144 eating establishments that are totally smoke free; the second lists 26 places where more than half the eating area is non-smoking; and the third lists 17 establishments with some 'no smoking' tables.

This first edition of the guide does not pretend to be a comprehensive list of all eating places with smoke-free areas in North Norfolk and Broadland. However, it will be updated annually, so if anyone knows of an eating place that is eligible and not listed, or is listed and fails to meet expectations, please contact one of the above partners straight away.

The free guide is now available from a variety of outlets including council offices in North Norfolk and Broadland, tourist information centres, libraries and chemists. It will soon also be available on county and district websites in Norfolk.
