Mundesley's clean and sparkling 'Blue Flag' beach now has a brand new car park and visitor facilities to match.

Under an Environmental Enhancement Scheme, which aims to increase visitors' enjoyment of the village and encourage them to return, major works have been carried out on the existing car park in Beach Road, and an enclosed grass picnic area has been sited alongside. In addition, a tourist information board and signs directing visitors to the centre of Mundesley are soon to be erected.

The car park - part of which used to close after the summer holiday season - has now been hard surfaced for the first time and provides all-year round parking for some 90 cars, with cycle racks and separate areas for motorbikes. Nine of the car parking spaces have been specially located and spaced for disabled drivers or passengers, and the pay-and-display ticket machines have been lowered for access by wheelchair users.

The total cost of the Environmental Enhancement Scheme, which has improved an area at the hub of Mundesley, linking the cliff and beach with the village centre, is approximately £122,000. It was funded by North Norfolk District Council and the East of England Development Agency.

"This area of the village has long been tired and rather shabby, and I am delighted with the way it now looks," said Wyndham Northam, District Councillor for Mundesley. "It is magnificent, and the inclusion of a picnic area in such a scheme is the first of its kind in North Norfolk.

"This project is a fine example of partnership working, and I'd like to thank everyone who has been involved," continued Mr Northam. "We are all working hard to regenerate the village, and this scheme, as well as making Mundesley more attractive for those who live here, will certainly encourage more visitors to stay and come back time after time - and that will be to everyone's benefit."

Note to Editor: The new car park and picnic area in Beach Road, Mundesley will be opened by Councillor Don Venvell, Chairman of North Norfolk District Council, at 10.30am on Thursday 2 May. Mr Venvell will be helped by 50 local schoolchildren, who will be visiting for a picnic.
