The National Lottery Bid

Scale model of the Maria Latineer
Since receiving in March, 2004, what is now the most treasured posession in the museums' Broads Collection - 'Maria' a unique lateen rigged racing yacht built in 1827 and still in near original condition, the museum trustees have been working tirelessly on a grant application of over £1m to the Heritage Lottery Fund.
If successful, this grant would transform the existing museum into an exciting 'Centre of Excellence' for an important National Park in the 21st Century.
It would provide a purpose built major gallery to house and display 'Maria' at her best and in full sail as well as other nationally important items in the collection including 'The Stuart Delf Marine Engine Collection'.
In addition, a small high quality cafe area overlooking the river would be created. Outside, a new mooring dock and new quay headings would be established, providing a safe mooring area for visiting historic boats and indeed the museum's own Edwardian Steam Launch 'Falcon' - soon to be steaming again.
Additional landscaping would complete this fabulous project. However, it is not all plain sailing! The museum trustees have to raise 10 % of the project costs themselves - this amounts to over £100,000 - no small task.
Work is well underway on this and fingers are being crossed. If you can help - in any way at all - do please contact the museum.
The Norfolk and Suffolk Broads are rich in heritage, traditions and old established skills - the area deserves a high quality museum - and that is what the Museum of the Broads Trust is constantly striving for.
Come and enjoy what we have to offer. The decision of the Heritage Lottery Fund is expected in September 2004 - watch this space!
