No Country for Old Men (15)

Director: Joel Coen , Ethan Coen United States 2007

Running time: 122mins

Starring: Tommy Jones, Woody Harrelson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin

When a Vietnam veteran discovers $2 million while wandering through the aftermath of a Texas drug deal gone horribly awry, his decision to abscond with the cash sets off a violent chain reaction in this brilliantly executed, stripped-down crime drama.

Llewelyn Moss (Brolin) discovers a bullet-strewn truck surrounded by the corpses of bodyguards and uncovers $2 million in the back of the vehicle. Later, as an enigmatic killer (Bardem) sets out in pursuit of Moss, the disillusioned Sheriff Bell (Lee Jones) struggles to contain the rapidly escalating violence that seems to be consuming his once-peaceful Lone Star State town.

A distinctly Coen-esque crime story that explores timeless Biblical themes, this return to Blood Simple territory is a dark and deadly affair.

Determined to live their last days to the fullest they make a break for it. With their checklist that includes playing poker in Monte Carlo and racing the fastest cars, the two men also forge a truly remarkable friendship.

There Will Be Blood (15)

Director: Paul Thomas Anderson United States 2007

Running time: 158m

Starring: Daniel Day Lewis, Kevin O'Connor, Ciaran Hinds, Paul Dano

A sprawling epic about family, faith, power and oil, There Will Be Blood is set on the incendiary frontier of California's turn-of-the-century petroleum boom.

The story chronicles the life and times of one Daniel Plainview (Day-Lewis), who transforms himself from a down-and-out silver miner raising a son on his own into a self-made oil tycoon. He takes a chance when he hears of a little town out West where an ocean of oil is oozing out of the ground, and makes his lucky strike. But as the well raises his and the town's fortunes, nothing will remain the same; conflicts escalate and every human value - love, hope, community, belief, ambition and even the bond between father and son - is imperilled by corruption, deception and the flow of oil.
