Government guidance requires that local authorities address the accommodation needs of Gypsies and Travellers. Current evidence indicates that two 'Short Stay Stopping Places' should be identified - one in the Cromer/Sheringham area and one in the Fakenham area. This need is outlined in the Core Strategy document which contains a draft policy for assessing any applications.
Following the Council's decision to omit Gypsy and Traveller sites from the Site Specific Proposals Preferred Options consultation exercise in September/ October 2006, a Gypsy and Traveller Consultation Forum was established to discuss how best to take forward the identification of sites in North Norfolk.
The Forum, which consisted of local parish and town councils, business interests and elected Members, assessed several sites in the Cromer/Sheringham and Fakenham areas and selected two 'preferred' sites: a site next to the Council offices in Cromer and a site off the A148 in Fakenham.
Further consultation with local communities on the details of any proposals for the two sites will be undertaken before planning applications are submitted. There will also be a statutory period of consultation when the applications are submitted and all views will be carefully considered.
