Supporting People

Launched in April 2003, Supporting People is a national programme committed to helping vulnerable people to live more independently and maintain their accommodation through the delivery of housing related support.  The programme works in partnership with District Councils, Probation, Health, voluntary sector organisations, housing associations, support agencies and service users, and gives people the choice to receive support in their own home or to move into supported accommodation.

In Norfolk, Supporting People is run by a partnership of organisations which includes all of the local and district authorities, health, probation and voluntary and statutory housing support providers.

What does Supporting People do?

The main objective is to sustain, develop and improve good quality housing support services which help people who are vulnerable or who have a disability to live as independently as possible in their own communities.

Supporting People funds a wide variety of housing related support services. For example, refuges for women fleeing domestic violence, sheltered housing for older people and support for young people moving into their first tenancy. Services are reviewed regularly to ensure they are of high quality, are cost effective and meet the needs of service users.

The national Supporting People programme makes a commitment for local authorities to continually review the types of support services needed.  In Norfolk we have a 5-year strategy and annual plan to ensure that any new service developments meet identified needs.
