Advice on Accessibility Matters

Access North Norfolk Action - ANNA - work to address accessibility issues in our community. Working closely with Norfolk County Council (Planning & Transportation Dept) and North Norfolk District Council (who support the group) their work includes such things as disabled parking spaces - ensuring that there are sufficient spaces of the correct size for orange Badge Holders.

ANNA also provide advice and assistance both to the disabled and to businesses. Over the years, they have provided assistance and advice to various companies, organisations, village halls, churches and schools as well as helping individuals take steps to address particular access problems. Disability Rights Commission (DRC)

The Disability Rights Commission (DRC) is an independent body, established by Act of Parliament to eliminate discrimination against disabled people and promote equality of opportunity.

The DRC provides a range of services including: an advice and information service for disabled people, employers and service providers; support for disabled people in securing their rights under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA); support for legal cases to set new precedents and test the limits of the law; campaigns; events; and publications about rights for disabled people and good practice for employers and service providers.

Social Services for People with Disabilities

Norfolk Disability Information Service

At the request of Norfolk Social Services' Physical Disability Teams, NDIS has produced Information Sheets for each district council area, including North Norfolk, giving contacts and brief details about useful organisations. These sheets are available at www.getphysical.norfolk.gov.uk and will download onto two sheets of A4.

NDIS produce bi-monthly newsletters which are also available from www.getphysical.norfolk.gov.uk in the information sheets section.


BBC Disability Norfolk Webpages

BBC Disability Norfolk webpages produced in association with Norfolk Coalition of Disabled People. These webpages at http://www.bbc.co.uk/norfolk/your/access/disability/index.shtml include a useful contact list and local and national information and news.


Norfolk's Joint Strategy for People with Physical or Sensory Impairment

The Strategy aims to improve the health and well-being of disabled people through joint work aimed at:

  • Improving access to services and community facilities
  • Improving the quality of services and community facilities
  • Equality of opportunity
and to ensure representatives of disabled people are fully involved in this work.

Kilverstone Mobility Assesment Centre

The Kilverstone Mobility Assessment Centre is a non-profit-making organisation who provide a service to help keep disabled people mobile and independent. The help they offer includes:

  • Comprehensive assessment of fitness to drive.
  • Specialist advice and information on car adaptations and driving with disabilities.
  • Assessment for and advice on outdoor powered scooters and wheelchairs.
  • Assessment and advice on disabled people wishing to travel as passengers.
  • Specialist fitness-to-drive check for the over 70's.
  • Help and advice for parents with disabled children who have problems relating to transport and mobility.
  • Assessments and reports for legal purposes.
  • Free Information Service on aspects of mobility

The Centre has well equipped assessment areas and private interview rooms, good parking and access, and disabled WC facilities. Adapted vehicles and a range of electric vehicles are available, with on- and off-road driving. There is also an indoor training area for wheelchairs and scooters. A dedicated team of staff, including Occupational Therapists, Approved Driving Instructors, office staff and volunteers provide the necessary guidance and advice.

Disabled Workers Co-operative

This is a non-profit making organisation that promotes the skills and services offered by disabled workers on a searchable database. Any disabled individual, sheltered workshop, company or organisation employing a significant number of disabled people can register at no charge.

Other useful contacts

North Norfolk District Councils Building Control and Access Manager offers advice and guidance on all matters relating to the accessibility of buildings be it at the application stage or changes to existing buildings. For more information please phone Mike Radley on (01263) 516132.

The gradual enactment of the Disability Discrimination Act will impose accessibility requirements on most shops, offices and public buildings.
