The Otesha Project UK (otesha.org.uk) are a group of young people who cycle around the UK throughout the summer stopping along the way to spread and share good ideas, from cycling to free-cycling; from free range to fair trade and create social and environmental change through our everyday lives and generally try to make the world a better place. All the presentations were developed by youth for youth and have received acclaim for their creativity, clarity and educational value.

On both days, Otesha will be showcasing their powerful Morning Choices Play (1 hour). This is a comedic and thought provoking look at the many ways we can each help to improve everyday choices. It explores issues around water, fashion, food, media, fair trade, transport, energy use and money, making the connection between global issues and their personal lifestyles. Along the way, the characters present lots of ideas for simple actions that we can all take to contribute to a better world.

In order to explore the issues introduced in the play, the team conduct interactive workshops with smaller groups and over the weekend, they will hold the following workshops:

  • The Great Banana Chain Game – The main goal of this is to think about systems of production and to explore how the consumption of an everyday product – a banana – impacts many interconnected people and resources, both positively and negatively.
  • Grow your own – Participants in this workshop will get down and dirty, planting their own seeds and learning about composting.

Fairyland Trust (www.fairylandtrust.org) will be making Fairy Gardens and Magic Wands in workshops taking place over the weekend.

  • Fairy Books – Make a miniature book and add pictures of wildflowers and leaves from trees. Learn the fairy folklore of trees and wildflowers
  • Magic Wands – A choosing ceremony sorts out the right wood for your wand which you can then decorate with feathers, ribbons, wool and glitter, ready for your own magic spells. Learn the fairy folklore of trees.

Maggie Campbell (www.maggiecampbellartist.com) will be making willow sculpture animals. Willow and tissue paper is very versatile, strong and light and can be used to create a wonderful range of shapes and sizes. This year Maggie will be making animals such as fish, butterflies, dragonflies and birds which can be painted in really bright colours

Footprint Arts (www.footprintarts.co.uk) will be making printing blocks using recycled materials. Printing blocks can be made from waste materials and a variety of discarded objects to produce exciting mark making possibilities. Once made, these can be used to produce patterns or images for pictures or cards.

Jessica Perry will be making barn owls from washed 4 pint plastic milk bottles. These can be strung up from the end of a stick to look as if flying and taken away to be used as very good vegetable/garden pigeon scarers.

MOMO theatre (www.momotheatre.co.uk) is a friendly, flexible organisation producing presentations, workshops and shows. Over the last 7 years they have gained an impressive reputation for providing effective, educational and entertaining productions all over the UK. Much of their experience has been in the area of sustainability and the environment and they create shows that are highly effective in informing, educating and encouraging behavioural change. They are also doing everything they can to be environmentally friendly such as using electricity from renewable energy and using waste chip oil to fuel their own vehicles. MOMO Theatre will be providing two shows per day over the 2 day event covering topics such as “Alternatives to using your car”, Waste – Reuse, Reduce, Recycle and Compost and Energy Efficiency.

National Trust guided tours of the Felbrigg Hall walled garden – The walks commence at 11.30 and 14.30

Green Buildings in Norfolk - Open Days 2009 - CPRE Norfolk's annual season of guided tours at energy-efficient buildings across Norfolk will be taking place from September 10th - 13th. From cottages to mills, barns to smallholdings, studios to sheds - each of the 12 buildings opening their doors has something different to offer. Many harness the energy of the wind, sun, river and rain. Some are hand-made - built from straw, cob, earth or timber. Some have roofs of sedum, wildflowers and grasses. Many use sheep's wool, recycled newspaper and other recycled or reclaimed materials. Visit www.cprenorfolk.org.uk/news-events and book with the Energy Saving Trust on 01376 531547.
