Safer Food Better Business

Safer Food Better Business NorfolkSafer Food Better Business Norfolk

The Safer Food Better Business Norfolk (SFBB) project was set up to assist small food businesses like hotels, takeaways, pubs, restaurants and cafés to develop a food safety management system as required by laws which came into force in January 2006.

Safer Food Better Business (SFBB) is a pack designed to help smaller food businesses comply with these laws. There are packs for both caterers and retailers. They also help businesses run more efficiently by reducing wastage, and customer complaints, as well as improving food safety. The packs have been designed by the Food Standards Agency in consultation with the catering industry. They are designed to take the drudgery (and expense) out of developing a food safety management system from scratch.

As part of the project, North Norfolk District Council offered free training to catering businesses connected with tourism in North Norfolk. Businesses that took part attended seminars to learn about food regulations, hygiene and the proper handling of food - the so-called "four Cs": cross-contamination, cleaning, chilling and cooking. They then received one-to-one coaching after the seminar to help apply what they had learned to their business. A cycle of evaluation, inspection and certification to prove they were upholding high standards of hygiene followed.

The project is now coming to a conclusion and most of the businesses that took part have received their certificates for successfully using Safer Food Better Business. There are more than 170 of these. Look for them whenever you are out in North Norfolk and looking for somewhere to eat. See below for a list of these and an example certificate. This list will continue to be updated for the next 4 months or so until all the participants have received their certificates.
