Flooding
Advice on preparing for and recovering from flooding.
-
Types of Flooding
There are different ways in which flooding can happen.
-
Environment Agency Flood Warnings
The Environment Agency issues initial flood warnings to the public. Find out how to sign up to receive these warnings if you are at risk of flooding.
-
During a Flood
What to do if you hear a flood warning.
-
Evacuation Centres
If the police or flood wardens advise you to evacuate, they will tell you where you should go. Please take their advice.
-
Flood Wardens
Flood Wardens are volunteers who, upon receiving flood warning messages, warn a set number of properties in their area of the threat posed from flooding.
-
Vulnerable People
If you feel you or your neighbours may be more vulnerable (for instance due to age, mobility, pregnancy or very young children), let your Flood Warden know in advance.
-
Sandbags
We do not recommend the use of sandbags. They are heavy, non-permanent and not particularly effective. If you live in a flood risk area, or an area with poor drainage, it is better to invest in permanent flood defences for your home.
-
After a Flood
It's important to do things right when a community is clearing up after a flood.
-
Publications
Download and print out these advice leaflets, so you have them to hand should the worst happen. Also included is the 2008 Flood Siren Consultation report.
