PRESS RELEASE
-
100 years ago, in the autumn of 1907, plans were well advanced to lay 12 new grass tennis courts on site in Norwich Road Cromer and in the following summer a local dentist, Mr A West Walker, who had his surgery in Norwich Road, organised the first tennis tournament on the new courts.
-
Now, 100 years later, members of Cromer Lawn Tennis & Squash Association are busy making plans to celebrate the centenary of this first tournament, which apart from the war years of 1914-18 and 1940-46 has been held every year since and now incorporates the Mens Open Championship of Norfolk.
-
Mr West Walker not only acted as referee and secretary for that first tournament but also won the mens' singles event as well, while another resident, Mrs A Buxton, became the first ladies champion. The club's records show that this initial tournament attracted 167 entrants who were highly complimentary about the new grass courts.
-
Events planned to celebrate the centenary in 2008 include an exhibition of memorabilia in the club house, a tournament that will be played in Edwardian style dress with wooden rackets and, to bring the celebrations to close, a Centenary Dinner and Ball which wll be held in a large marquee on the Norwich Road courts on 13th Septeber 2008. This will undoubtedly be the highlight of the year and will feature arguably the best known and most respected band in the Eastern Counties, The Lee Vasey Band.
-
Club Chairman, Nick Amis, who has been involved at the club for more than half its centenary said: "We are going to have a really exciting year and this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for people to celebrate something unique and very special. I can remember as a young lad watching Tony Pickard win the men's event in 1953 and Ann Haydon, who of course went on to become Wimbledon champion in 1955. Twenty years later, in 1975, 15 member of the Iranian National team entered and dominated the tournament and then a very young Chris Bailey won the event in 1985. One of my predecessors, Tony Spurgeon, captain of the Norfok tennis team is in touch with the Norfolk LTA and the LTA as we are trying to locate as many former champions as possible."
-
Tickets for the Ball will be priced at £40 each and are expected to sell out very quickly. If anybody would like to reserve tickets now, or pre-book a table for 10 guests, they should contact the Club on 01263 513741 or speak to the Chairman on 01263 837255.
