Lent
LENT IN THE PARISH OF OUR LADY AND ST JOSEPH 2010
Lent is the Church's annual period of purification and enlightenment. It is the final stage of preparation for those who are to be baptized (or received into full communion) at Easter. All of us join during the forty days of Lent with those preparing to become full members of the Church. We support them by our prayers and example, and seek with them an ever deeper knowledge and love of Christ, in the mystery of his life, death and glorious resurrection.
ASH WEDNESDAY: February 17th: MASS (with Imposition of Ashes) at 9am (Cromer), 10.30am (Sheringham) and 7pm (Sheringham).
Ash Wednesday (along with Good Friday) is a 'Day of Fasting and Abstinence'. On Ash Wednesday (and Good Friday) we reduce the amount of food that we eat ('fasting') and we do not eat meat ('abstinence'). In doing this, we seek to turn our attention away from ourselves and our own comfort and look rather to God - as Jesus says to the Tempter: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds from the mouth of God' (St. Matthew, Chapter 4)
