R.C. Diocese of East Anglia:
A Registered Charity (Charity Commission No. 278742)

News-sheet for week beginning
Sunday, 28th February, 2010
THE SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT (Year 'C')

Weekday Readings: Monday: Proper Readings (St David)
Tuesday - Saturday: as appointed for the Second Week of Lent
Psalms for Week 2

Dear Parishioners,

In the Gospel this Sunday, we hear St Luke's account of the Transfiguration of Jesus. Together with Jesus, Moses and Elijah appeared; and 'they were speaking of his exodus, which he was to accomplish in Jerusalem'. As I said last week, all through Lent we need to keep our eyes fixed on Holy Week. Moses and Elijah urged the Apostles who were with Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration to look ahead to all that would happen in the last week of Jesus' life, when he accomplished his 'exodus' to the Father. In the Homily this Sunday, I shall be looking ahead to all that we celebrate concerning the mystery of Christ's saving 'exodus' at the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Maundy Thursday.

This Sunday:
3pm: Stations of the Cross
3pm: Stations of the Cross and Benediction at Our Lady of Refuge

THE PARISH LENT PROGRAMME - the Mystery of Prayer:
I have been asked to provide in the News-sheet each week some biblical quotations and a couple of questions on the theme of each week's talk. It is hoped this may enable those who are unable to attend the programme to have still some share in it.
This coming week, the second sessions will be about 'looking round - conversion of mind and heart'.
So, for Scripture, I suggest: Psalm 121 ('I will lift up my eyes to the hills'); St Luke, Chapter 18, verses 18 - 30 (The rich young ruler).
A couple of questions: How can I most effectively live 'in the world', yet also be 'not of the world'?
In what ways do I need to discipline myself in my everyday life, in order to be more attentive to God in prayer time?

ADVANCE NOTICES
CHILDREN'S MASS AT ST JOSEPH'S on Mothering Sunday (March 14th): 10.30am
There will be no First Holy Communion Programme, nor Children's Liturgy, on this Sunday. The First Holy Communion children will be saying the Bidding Prayers at this Mass. We would like also to include children from the Children's Liturgy Group, including potential Readers.
Please let Val Bowie know as soon as possible if your child will be available on this day. There will be a brief practice after Mass this Sunday and next Sunday for those children who would like to take an active part in this Mass.

RECEPTION OF MRS. ANN CONNOLLY INTO FULL COMMUNION: At the 6pm Mass on March 20th at Our Lady of Refuge I shall be receiving Ann Connolly into full communion. Ann has been attending Mass at Our Lady of Refuge for quite a long time - well before I came to the Parish. She lives in the Suffield Park area of Cromer. One of her daughters, who became a Catholic some years ago, will be her Sponsor. Please keep Ann in your prayers.

(ADVANCE NOTICES; continued)
APPEAL FOR NEW GIFT AID SUBSCIBERS: At all Masses during the weekend March 20th/21st Sean White, the Parish Gift Aid Administrator, will be making an appeal for new Gift Aid Subscribers. If you expressed interest in becoming a Gift Aid Subscriber at the time of the Appeal last year, but did not follow it up - please give your name to Sean this time round!
Could I also take this opportunity to clarify one point about Gift Aid: that you can only 'gift-aid' your offering for Second Collections when special 'Gift Aid Envelopes' are provided (with the name of the charity in question on them).

CHILDREN'S ACTIVITY AFTERNOON AT ST ANDREW'S METHODIST CHURCH, SHERINGHAM: This 'Churches Together in Sheringham' event will take place on Saturday, 27th March: 1.30pm - 4pm. Children - and also volunteer helpers - very welcome.

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK IN SHERINGHAM: 9th - 15th May
Message from Edward Smith, Christian Aid Collection Organiser:
We greatly appreciate all the help from members of St Joseph's. Unfortunately several Collectors will not be able to assist this year, because of ill health.
We would welcome some new Collectors. This would be arranged in a suitable area. Even collecting in a small area, say, half a street, would be a great help. Please contact Kevin Jones (Tel: 01263-837708) or Audrey O'Neil (Tel: 01263-826886).

I can now let you know that the profit on the whole event - supper and raffle - was £260. That was a remarkable achievement. Once again, very many thanks to everyone involved.
