Victim Support

Victim Support is an organisation that was set up on the early 1970s after it was discovered that there was not a single support service for those affected by crime.

Some of the funding comes from the Government, but the group remains a registered charity and has to raise a proportion of its own funds to be able to offer a comprehensive and seamless service.

A base of trained volunteers offers a service to the community, whether you have suffered a burglary or been assaulted, have had your bag taken or endured a sexual assault. The volunteers aim to give help, information and support for as long as you need it; you and your needs lead them. The support can be over the phone or face to face in your own home, and also on neutral ground if necessary. The service also helps people with Criminal Injury Claims, which is a free service.

Anyone has to access the service, whether it has been reported to the Police or not and whether you are the victim or not. The service is offered confidentially because it is the belief of the organisation that the information you provide is still yours and will not be communicated unless you ask us to do so on your behalf.

Victim Support has a sister service that is in both the Crown Courts and Magistrates Courts all over the county. This means anyone who has to give evidence in court can access witness support from before or when they enter the court building. The volunteer is with them before and after giving their evidence and then once they leave the court they can be handed back to or over to Victim Support in their area.
