Sheringham supermarkets meeting will follow parish poll

26 August 2010

The planning meeting to confirm a decision on supermarket applications at Sheringham will follow a parish poll in the town, and is now scheduled for 14 October.

Sheringham Town Council intends to seek a parish poll, to take place on 30 September, to gauge the feeling of electors in the town about the two supermarket plans.

A parish poll is not a referendum, and its outcome is not legally binding. But it will give a clear indication of the views of the community.

Councillor Virginia Gay, Leader of NNDC and Cabinet Member for Planning, said: “We would be interested in the result of the poll, and it seemed sensible to agree with the town council that our Development Control Committee meeting would follow the outcome.”

A parish poll is conducted like an election for a council or parliament. It is only open to registered electors.

The poll will be held provided enough registered electors call for one at a formal parish meeting due on 2 September, when the question or questions will be approved. The question(s) must be phrased so that they can only be answered ‘yes’ or ‘no’. The poll will take place only within the boundaries of the parish of Sheringham.
