What’s special about Fakenham’s townscape?

Fakenham is undergoing a Conservation Area Appraisal — a review of the conservation area designation that protects the town’s character through the planning process — and North Norfolk District Council wants to hear people’s views about how the conservation area is managed in future.

North Norfolk District Council’s Conservation, Design and Landscape team has drawn up a draft Character Appraisal and Management Proposals document for Fakenham. This seeks to define the special qualities in Fakenham’s conservation area, and the things that threaten it. It also aims to give planners guidelines for preventing the erosion of Fakenham’s character — and enhancing it where possible.

A consultation about the proposals will be held in the town from 8 July to 2 August, with an exhibition in the Library, on Oak Street. Questionnaires will be available for people to complete after they’ve had a look at what’s proposed. A drop-in meeting with council conservation officers is planned, at a time and venue to be confirmed towards the end of the consultation period, for people who have questions or want to discuss the future management of the conservation area. Details of this event will be published when it is confirmed.

Councillor Hilary Nelson, the Council’s Historic Environment and Design Champion, said: “I hope Fakenham people will tell us what they think is special about the town’s built environment and street scene, so we can build their comments into the final plan.”

She added: “Our built heritage and natural environment matter enormously to people — not just those who live here, but those who visit us too.”

Many of North Norfolk’s Conservation Areas were designated in the 1970s and 1980s, and have not been reviewed since, despite growth and changes in those communities. North Norfolk District Council aims to have reviewed a third of its 81 conservation areas by the end of 2011.
