Current Safer Communities Partnership Projects

Community Action Days Over 60 people from 14 different partnership agencies took part in cleaning up North Walsham on the first Community Action Day. Work included clearing gullies and ditches, hedges timming and picking weeds from around the pavements. Street signs and street lights were also repaired and cleaned.

Trading Standards Officers called into local businesses to make checks on weights and measures and give reminders and advice on 'age restricted' sales.

Fire Officers made inspections on many business premises. In addition, a number of fire safety inspections were done for elderly and vulnerable residents and Police Officers also did some crime prevention surveys on homes, giving advice on how to protect valuable items from theft.

The purpose of the day was to improve the quality of life in the area and instill local pride in the town. Many of the jobs done on the day were in response to reports and complaints made by members of the public.

Another event is being planned for later this year and will include an evening event which will target 'night time economy' issues such as drunken and anti-social behaviour. Domestic Violence Advocacy Worker
The Safer Communities Partnership has funded the employment of a Domestic Violence Advocacy Worker who is working towards increasing the number of successful prosecutions by 30% of people who are arrested for using violence against their partners.

It is anticipated that the worker will support upto 50 of the most vulnerable victims of domestic violence per year.

Youth Inclusion Project
This project is aimed at increasing young peoples contribution in the identification and delivery of crime and disorder reduction, particularly in areas where young people are the victims.

So far this year, the project has identified the need for a youth shelter in North Walsham and the partnership has funded the provision of such a shelter in conjunction with the North Walsham Skateboard Park Project, which has received Lottery Funding.

Crucial Crew Event
Crucial Crew is a national scheme which has been brought to North Norfolk for the first time this year. The event lasts for one week and is made up of ten interactive workshops which each lasts 10 minutes and delivers messages around safety and good citizenship.

The event is being held at RAF Neatishead and will run for the week commencing 10th October 2005. Partner agencies including Norfolk Police; Norfolk Fire Service; NNDC; Health & Safety Executive; Maddermarket Theatre; Environment Agency; EDF Energy; British Transport Police and ONE Railways are all taking an active part to make this event happen.
