Changes to Discretionary Rate Relief

We’ve changed the way we give business rates relief to charities, sports clubs and other community organisations, or vital businesses like villages’ sole remaining general stores or filling stations.

Some organisations automatically qualify for relief, while North Norfolk District Council can also, at its own discretion, reduce the amount of business rates payable — in some cases charging nothing at all. The amount of relief differs from case to case, based on the contribution the organisation makes to the local community, and the difficulties it faces.

In the past, organisations would continue getting rate relief year after year, and only had to inform NNDC if their circumstances changed. From 1 April 2010, after a review of NNDC’s Discretionary Rate Relief Policy, they will have to apply for rate relief each year.
