Who can qualify for benefit?
You are entitled to claim benefits if you are on a low income, a UK resident and liable to pay Council Tax and/or rent and that you are living at the address you are claiming for. However you cannot get help towards mortgage payments – advice regarding this can instead be obtained from the Department for Work and Pensions.
You will not qualify for Housing and/or Council Tax Benefit if your savings are greater than £16,000, the only exception to this rule is where the Department for work and Pensions may have disregarded some/all of your capital and awarded you one of the following benefits:
- Income Support
- Jobseekers Allowance (income-based)
- Employment Support Allowance (income-related)
- Pension Credit (guarantee-element).
If you do not qualify for Council Tax Benefit you may be entitled to Second Adult Rebate.
